I’ve been hearing a lot about artificial intelligence lately. This thing they call AI seems to be everywhere, and I’m in two minds about it.

On one hand, it looks like it’s here to stay. And it seems to be pretty smart.

I asked one of these AI apps ‘what does Alan Jones think about the Snowy Hydro?’. It parroted back all my opinions on the Snowy before I could change the colour of my tie. And let me tell you – it was right on the money.

On the other hand, I worry about the unknown consequences of this kind of technology. Do we really understand it? Can we really understand it?

I’m not so sure.

But I guess it’s the same with any technological advancement. People were against the introduction of the motorcar afterall.

When it comes to our working lives, I think AI comes with potential advantages and disadvantages. It could reduce our working hours and give us more leisure time. But it’s bound to wipe out some jobs too.

I also worry about the education system. If we’re to make this AI stuff really work for us, the education system needs to get up to speed – and fast. Are we training our kids for the new employment opportunities that will exist in an AI-assisted world? I have my doubts.

And now they’re telling me AI is some kind of sharemarket genius. They reckon you can put it to work making investment decisions and expect the profits to start piling up.

Look, I’m always suspicious of these kinds of claims. I think we need to listen to the experts about how this would work, and ask some critical questions about it before we dive in.

But if we want to stay in step with society, we have to start to understand all these new instruments. If this technology is as beneficial as they’re saying, we need to learn about it, understand it, and take advantage of it.

Greg Owen, CEO of Goko Group, and I are going to sit down together and get to the bottom of some of these issues. I’m going to share my concerns about AI, and talk through some of the potential positives it might bring into our lives.
